Brazil — By on August 5, 2009 at 1:29 pm

It used to be that international explorers merely strived to check off as many wonders of the world as they could off their travel lists. Now, they can take it one step further and actually influence which locations fall on that list – gotta love the digital age! And since Iguacu Falls and The Amazon are two locations The Lost Girls have visited, and loved, we felt compelled to share the below bit of news with you. But no matter which wonders you value the most, we encourage you to vote – and then get on the road and go see your top seven for yourself!

Iguazu Falls BrazilThe Amazon and Iguacu Falls will go head-to-head against the 26 other places to be named the “New 7 Wonders of Nature,” based on a global online poll announced July 21 in Zurich. Votes can be submitted online at http://www.new7wonders.com/ and more than 1 billion people are expected to submit, with winners announced in 2011. A similar effort was executed two years ago when Christ the Redeemer, a famous statue in Rio de Janeiro , was elected as one of the seven man-made wonders of the world.

Why vote Brazil?
– The Amazon welcomed nearly 500,000 tourists to the Amazon in 2008. Sixty percent of this mammoth rainforest is contained within Brazil . The Amazon represents more than half of the planet’s remaining rainforests and comprises the largest and most species-rich tract of tropical rainforest in the world. Boasting 324 mammals, 2,500 species of fish and 1,800 different species of birds, The Amazon is truly a wonder.
РThe National Igua̤u Park , one of the biggest forest reserves within South America , has greeted 1.1 million visitors in the last year. Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horseshoe shape over nearly two miles of the Iguacu River, the grandeur of the Iguacu Falls led Eleanor Roosevelt to say Poor Niagara.
