Look up in the sky! It’s a bird….it’s a plane! No….it’s your weekly air travel news! Here’s what’s happening in the world of aviation, from the ground up.
Chicago is the hometown of both United Airlines and The Oprah Winfrey Show. In honor of the 25th and final season of The Oprah Winfrey Show, United has outfitted a Boeing 757 in an Oprah-theme. The aircraft has been fully renovated both inside and out and will be flying routes throughout United’s domestic network through May, 2011. In addition, United is giving away – get this! – one million United Mileage Plus miles a month through May, 2011. Sweepstakes entry can be found at United Million Miles and photo uploads of the specially painted aircraft are encouraged.
On The Airfare Horizon
If you’ve been thinking that airfare to almost anywhere these days costs more than in the past – even as recently as a year ago – you’re not dreaming. Many reasons contribute to this: the recovery of the global economy, airlines preferring to pack full the planes that are already flying rather than add more flights. If you’re flying from the US you’ll be hard pressed to find a destination that hasn’t substantially risen in price. The good news, if you can call it that, is that because of the huge increases this year, next year will likely show smaller inflation for US markets.
Aren’t You At Least Going To Buy Me Dinner First?
The use of airport body scanners is on the rise and, in addition, the TSA pat-downs are getting much more vigorous. Frankly, the newly implemented procedure seems best described as a grope. Seems that the traveler’s choice at most airports these days is a) having your naked image broadcast for the unseen masses in the back room or b) a fondling by a stranger. Which would you choose??
From November 20 until January 2, Wi-Fi access on all Air Tran, Delta and Virgin America equipped flights will be free courtesy of Google!
This week’s new routes are thanks to AeroMexico, Air Canada, and Continental times 2.
