Look up in the sky! It’s a bird….it’s a plane! No….it’s your weekly air travel news! Here’s what’s happening in the world of aviation, from the ground up.

Asleep At The Scope

Yeah, we get that it’s not very busy during the overnight shift at an airport.  But that’s still no excuse for catching some zzz’s.  The air traffic supervisor responsible for the tower at Washington National Airport was literally sleeping on the job instead of controlling the planes.  The supervisor has been suspended, so that’s a start, but the bigger question is why the tower was only staffed with one person to begin with.  Come on, anything can happen!   Source:  FOXNews

Miami Heat

Over the weekend hundreds of flights into and out of Miami Airport were cancelled or delayed due to a fire at it’s fuel depot last week.  Miami typically handles about 800 flights a day and about a quarter of those were affected.   The problem was that the fuel pumps used to transfer fuel from the large fuel depot to the trucks near the terminals were damaged in the fire.  Due to the backlog, it could take quite a while for the situation to return to normal.   Source:  UPI

Fear Of Flying

If all this talk of what can go wrong when flying is making you a little anxious, there is help.  Many people suffer from some form of aerophobia.  Even if it’s not the full-blown, white-knuckled variety, a lot of us feel some butterflies in our stomach when we experience turbulence during a flight.  Or maybe we just don’t like being cooped up in a small space, ala claustrophobia.  Good news:  there’s help out there.  Calmspace is a small roll-on vial with natural essential oils (lavender, vanilla) designed to produce feelings of relaxation.  Sounds like it couldn’t hurt.   Source:  Chicago Tribune

A Lounge For The Rest Of Us

Speaking of relaxation, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to find a nice little spot away from the crowds to relax during an airport layover?  Without paying the outrageous prices most elite airline lounges require?  Your prayers might soon be answered in the form of Airspace.  This new space will be opening at the Baltimore Airport possibly as soon as May.  With free snacks and WiFi (after paying the entry fee – a paltry $17.50/day) let’s hope this catches on and more locations pop up.  Source:  Jaunted
