Indulging in London’s Luxury LingerieShopping & Style — By Julie F on March 3, 2011 at 12:00 pm
When most girls think about the world’s best lingerie lines, their minds reel off to places like Paris, with its dollhouse pink boutiques full of super-feminine Fifi Chachnil creations. London, which is better known in the fashion world for the daring designs of Vivianne Westwood, isn’t normally at the top of the lingerie list.
But it should be. The UK is home to an increasing number of high-end lingerie labels, many of which are taking unique approaches to traditional undergarments. In fact, there are so many of them that some have joined together to form The Lingerie Collective, which opened a shop in the heart of London’s Soho district last fall.
Located at 8 Ganton Street, The Lingerie Collective shop is just off the popular pedestrian shopping area of Carnby Street. The intimate boutique is home to the newest and most progressive styles from some of Britain’s best luxury lingerie brands.
These include labels like Modern Courtesan, which brings a playful approach to lingerie while maintaining high quality craftsmanship in every piece. Their collections include titles like Do Disturb, which features flirty French Maid outfits; Cruise, which was inspired by 1950s pin-up girls and offers sailor suits made from blue and white silk with Swarovski crystal details; and Made in England, which gives a nod to the Union Jack and the UK’s punk traditions in its black-and-metallic silk designs.
Modern Courtesan’s sister brand, MC Lounge, is also represented at The Lingerie Collective. Featuring silk loungewear and lingerie, MC Lounge promises that all of its pieces are “handmade in England with love.” And love them we do. Items like midnight blue silk playsuits and off-the-shoulder Ts can be worn for any occasion, and are both comfortable and indulgent. That’s to say nothing of their stretch satin yoga shorts, which are beautiful and chic in muted gold.
Also in The Lingerie Collective are brands like London-based Mint Siren. Chief designer Josefine Wing creates collections that are inspired by the label’s belief that each piece is a fashion garment in its own right. Ushering in a new era of fashionable lingerie, the company is at the cutting edge with pieces like silk boustiers with black and gold leather belts.
And let’s not forget about Lascivious, a British label that is all about desirability and seduction. Their “indulgent directional lingerie” includes collections like Simone Citric, a line that features lemon yellow silk satin layered under graduating black tulle, with a picot trim at the top. They also have collections ranging from racy Showgirls lines like the fringe-heavy Roxy and the Swarovski crystal-studded Stardust, to all-white bridal lines like the tulle-and-satin Belle Bride and the ruffles-and-bows Kitty Bride. Rounding out Lascivious’ offerings is the Luxury Basics collection, which offers everyday lingerie with a luxurious twist.
With all of the innovation and creativity happening in the UK lingerie world, the next time a Lost Girl starts thinking of the best lingerie lines, she would be smart to look to London. Or in London. The Lingerie Collective is right in the heart of the city, and makes an easy trip for a little luxury fashion indulgence.
