Stellenbosch On A BudgetBudget Travel, Extras, Food & Wine, South Africa, Tours & Attractions — By LauraM on March 16, 2011 at 6:00 pm
Stellenbosch, located on the Western Cape, is famous for its wine lands. With tons of wineries to explore, Stellenbosch is an essential stop on your trip throughout South Africa. Although the idea of a wine weekend may sound expensive, a great weekend in Stellenbosch does not have to be.
How to get there:
Take the train from Cape Town, which takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
Cost: A one-way first class ticket from Cape Town costs R 13 or around $2 US dollars.
If you have a car, driving about an hour to Stellenbosch is also an option.
Where to stay:
Check out The Stumble Inn located in downtown Stellenbosch. Within walking distance from the train station, this upbeat backpacker’s lodge includes a bar, swimming pool, a helpful staff, and two residences to choose from. The residences are right down the street from each other and both provide a clean, comfortable and convenient stay in Stellenbosch. It was one of my favorite hostels to stay in thus far.
Cost: R100 a night or $14 US dollars.
Breakfast/Lunch: Melissa’s: The Food Shop
This adorable shop and café is sure to please every type of eater. This chain has a great selection of egg dishes, breakfasts and lunch specials. It is a great place to sit outside, enjoy fresh squeezed juice and the charming town of Stellenbosch.
Cost: Meals start at R50, which is about $7 US dollars
Dinner: Sgt Pepper
All this restaurant serves is pizza but this is not your average pie. Toppings include butternut squash, bacon, various types of chicken and more.
Cost: Meals start at R50, which is about $7 US dollars.
Go on a wine tour: Easy Rider Wine Tours leave right from The Stumble Inn and discounts are possible depending on the amount of nights you stay at the hostel. The Wine tour includes stops and tastings at four wineries, a cellar tour, lunch and a cheese tasting. The four wineries all provide a different atmosphere and great views of the wine lands.
Cost: R400 or a little under $60 US dollars.
Visit Stellenbosch University Botanical Gardens: Admission to the garden is free and definitely worth checking out. It is a short walk from the hostel and is the perfect Sunday morning activity.
Stellenbosch is the perfect weekend getaway so make sure you add the wine lands to your vacation to do list!
