Where to Stay in Sydney, AustraliaAustralia, Hotels & Resorts — By Brooke S on April 4, 2011 at 6:00 am
For anyone who’s ever been to Sydney, they know that a good pair of walking shoes is definitely on the packing list. Sydney is a city that is wider than it is tall: You won’t get the “big city” feel that you have in cities like New York or Chicago, but there is still a lot to cover and explore. For this reason, knowing where to stay in Sydney is a very helpful tip that can make or break your trip. Here are some of your options for choosing hotels in Sydney, the most populous and popular city in the land down under.
Where to stay in Sydney
Choosing where to stay in Sydney depends on the activities you want to be close to, or the atmosphere you are wishing to experience while in this city.
Choosing hotels near Sydney Opera House
Hotels near Sydney Opera House will generally provide you with the best views in the city, and give you quick access to the harbour areas including the Rocks district, Circular Quay, and the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain. You will most likely pay for this luxury, however, but it can make for a great experience nonetheless. There are plenty of great bars and restaurants in the area and just on the waterfront to partake in, and let’s not forget about Sydney Opera House shows and the shopping!
Choosing hotels in the Rocks
The Rocks is the historic center of the city, filled with stone walls and cobblestone streets here and there. It is the site of the very first settlement in Sydney, and it has heaps of character today because of it. Staying in the Rocks will put you in the best location for taking advantage of the walking tours, pub tours and even ghost tours that happen in these parts, and the Rocks Markets take place on the weekends. You’ll be right down near the waterfront by choosing hotels in the Rocks, but just like all other hot spots, you’ll have to drop a couple extra bucks a night to have that luxury. Is it worth it? Definitely in my mind!
Choosing hotels near Darling Harbour
Darling Harbour is a little inlet of water surrounded by some serious nightlife and restaurants, and just a really pretty place to hang out at night. Staying in this part of town will give you easy access to the Sydney Fish Markets, the IMAX Theater, Star City Casino, bars and clubs, and it’s a really simple walk to the train stations closer to the city, such as Town Hall. Choosing hotels near Darling Harbour will put you in yet another prime location of the city with brilliant water views.
Choosing hotels near Bondi
You can’t make a list of where to stay in Sydney without mentioning hotels near Bondi Beach, one of the world’s most popular beach hangouts. Choosing this location in Sydney is for those that really want to take advantage of the beach culture. There are some things to keep in mind when choosing hotels near Bondi, though, such as the fact you won’t have a train line to the city going directly from this point. You will either have to take a taxi or bus when desiring the comforts of city life, but it is really not bad when you consider the awesome beach holiday you’ll be having in Sydney.
Please note that this list is purely a starting point when choosing where to stay in Sydney, which is really a city that spans miles and encompasses hundreds of suburbs. It doesn’t mention the alternative areas of Newtown, the trendy cafe areas of Surry Hills and Glebe, and it definitely doesn’t mention the quieter beach area of Coogee. Sydney deserves a good stay to really appreciate, but if you have only a short time to spare, I’d start with the areas above.
