Look up in the sky! It’s a bird….it’s a plane! No….it’s your weekly air travel news! Here’s what’s happening in the world of aviation, from the ground up.

Enhanced Security Measures

Obviously, the big news this week is the death of Osama Bin Laden.  The fallout for travelers will likely be a greater emphasis on airport security.  TSA will be as vigilant as ever at the screening stations, but it’s also probable that there will be updated security throughout the entire airport area.  Do yourself a favor and leave extra time pre-flight.  Source:  Jaunted

Airplane Apparel

How much time do you spend thinking about what to wear on a plane?  Probably not much.  From head to toe and everywhere in between there are some rules that, when followed, can make for a more pleasant traveling experience.  And don’t forget the easy on/off shoes for security checkpoints.  Source:  MSNBC

When Smaller Is Better

The airline that you’ve never heard of may be your best bet.  Airline ticket prices are on the rise and the summer travel season is almost here, bringing with it fuller flights and shorter tempers.  The answer may well be one of the upstart budget airlines.  Allegiant, Vision, Direct Air and Sun Country are examples of these small, regional airlines.  You’ll pay for extras such as checked bags and snacks;  but wait, you pay for those with the major airlines too!  With prices as low as $49 one way, if you happen to be traveling to and from the cities they serve you can most likely save some cash.  Source:  NYTimes

Time Well-Spent

How much is your time worth?  Well, according to the new Department of Transportation rules about compensation for being involuntarily bumped from a flight, it’s about to be worth more.  If you’re at all flexible and don’t mind arriving late to your destination, you will be refunded four times the cost of your ticket, up to $1300.  Not too bad for a forced detour to the airport bar.  Source:  Gadling
