Look up in the sky! It’s a bird….it’s a plane! No….it’s your weekly air travel news! Here’s what’s happening in the world of aviation, from the ground up.

Runway Race

A long, flat, paved surface sounds perfect for a run! Ok, its a runway and it’s occupants are usually aircraft, but every once in a while us mortals get to check it out. If you happen to be around Columbia, South Carolina on Saturday and feel like going for a run, you’re in luck. With a 5K, a 1 Mile and a Kids Run, there’s something for everyone. Strangely, the Runway Run site doesn’t mention a starting time for the races, but packet pick-up is at 8 am so we can assume the run starts sometime thereafter. Source:  Jaunted

Getting Back On Track

Remember Steven Slater? The flight attendant who took a joyride on one of JetBlue’s emergency exit chutes? A little over a year after that stunt he seems to have gotten his life back together. He’s completed court ordered mental health counseling and drug and alcohol treatment and is working on a memoir about his career in the aviation industry. He was spared jail time for his antics, but has to pay back JetBlue the $10,000 it cost to deploy the chute. And he’s lost 35 pounds! Source:  New York Daily News

Pay What You Weigh

Southwest Airlines made the news a while back when they removed Kevin Smith from one of their flights for being too fat. Now that they’ve merged with AirTran it seems that the policy will be carrying over to that airline too as of March 1, 2012. Basically, a passenger who can’t sit in a seat with the armrests down will be required to purchase 2 seats. If the flight ends up having empty seats the cost of the second seat will be refunded. A source of contention on both sides of the argument, it looks like there’s no ‘one size fits all’ answer.  Source:

‘Tis The Season

If you’re planning on flying during the holiday season you’d best buy your ticket sooner rather than later. The major US carriers all announced air fare hikes of between $4 and $10 each way and even the low-cost Southwest Airlines and AirTran are following suit. Seems like it happens every year and this year is no exception. Higher prices and fuller flights…Happy Holidays!  Source: USAToday

Screaming Meemies

And in a trifecta for Southwest Airlines today, last week one of their flights was diverted from it’s planned flight due to a passenger screaming obscenities in-flight. A week later and details are still sketchy, but it appears that it wasn’t a terrorism related action. The unruly passenger’s own father has no idea what could have caused the behavior. Kudos to the flight crew for thinking of the other 135 uncomfortable passengers and taking action to land the aircraft. Source:  MSNBC
