Missed the big travel stories of the week? And the weird, wacky and insignificant ones? We’ve got your roundup right here…
Piña Coladas and Pec Implants
You’ve heard of voluntourism and ecotourism, and now you can add surgery-tourism to the list. Apparently, “jet set surgery” is a rising trend where tourists go to a destination (the most popular being Rio de Janiero in Brazil) for low cost plastic surgery and a luxurious stay in an exotic destination. But all is not perfect in this seemingly wonderful scheme: Traveling abroad for procedures can be risky and life-threatening since each country has their own regulations for products and qualifications for doctors. The 2012 calendar year may see more tourism, but certainly not due to the cheap airfare. Airlines are hiking their fares for the third time this year. The airlines include United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, U.S. Airways and Virgin America. The reason behind the hike is the increased fuel costs. Source: USA Today

Traveling to get surgery seems like a huge risk to me. So much can go wrong with a surgery when you have developed a relationship with your surgeon over many consultations, know the procedures of the hospital and have a support system to help you recover, it just seems unreasonably dangerous to travel to get an elective surgery.
