Look up in the sky! It’s a bird….it’s a plane! No….it’s your weekly air travel news! Here’s what’s happening in the world of aviation, from the ground up.

TSA Is Trying

Congress vs. TSA; who will win? House lawmakers met last week with TSA officials to try to straighten out the mess that is airport security. Some of the suggestions seem quite ludicrous – passengers should be allowed to carry knives onto airplanes? But others – allowing bottled water through security and leaving your shoes on for the security check – seem benign.  Source: MSNBC

Cheers For Alaska Air

While Alaska Air says they charge a $25 oversize carry-on bag fee at the gate, in reality it is rarely enforced. Quite understandably, they say their priority is a smooth boarding process as well as making sure there is sufficient overhead space for all. The advertised fee functions as a deterrent to keep carry-on bags to a reasonable and manageable size. Bonus: if you’re traveling within the state of Alaska you won’t be charged a carry-on fee at all. Source:  USAToday

Elite For The Rest Of Us

Lusting after a primo seat on your next flight? Or maybe you just want to while away a long layover in the airline lounge instead of in the terminal with the rest of the masses. Even if you don’t fly enough to score these perks gratis, there are still ways to upgrade your flying experience. Sure, it will cost you, but if you focus on just the 1 or 2 extras that really make your flight more comfortable, it can be worth it.  Source: NY Times

Tips For Scoring Cheap Airfare

While airfare prices are only rising, there are deals to be had if you know where to search. The key to saving some bucks is flexibility. That means not being set on a particular flight or even destination. By being open to anything or anywhere you can save big. Staying connected to the airlines via social media is another solid way to save.  Source:  SeattlePI
