Has a film ever captured your imagination so much that watching it actually prompted you to book your next getaway? According to a survey of nearly 1,000 women, led by leading UK travel comparison site Travel Supermarket, nearly 20 percent of us have been inspired to hit the road after seeing a destination on the big screen.
Survey respondents cited more than 60 international locales, but Greece (including Kefalonia) topped the list, thanks to the films “Mamma Mia” and “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.” Rounding out the top five were, in descending order of popularity:
- New York City – 10 percent of women were inspired by “Sex in the City” among several other Big Apple-based flicks.
- New Zealand – 7 percent took off after seeing the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
- Thailand – 6 percent of ladies left home after seeing Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Beach.”
- Australia – the blockbuster “Australia” tempted 4 percent of women to travel down under.
We’re curious – have you been inspired to travel after watching a movie? Let us know in the comments section. And, since summer is beginning to show its hot, sticky self in New York, a tropical beach already sounds thrilling. Check out Travel Supermarket’s Thailand section for deals!

The movie Australia is actually spurring me to go Down Under again, this time to visit the great outback.
I recently watched Letters from Juliet and it made me want to travel to Italy. It was beautiful and my dream to go there…soon.
The film ‘In Bruges’ really makes me want to visit Belgium, Bruges looks beautiful. Yes, it was a black comedy about hitmen but all of the scenes and backdrops were stunning: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780536/
The movie Chasing Liberty made me want to go to Europe on my own.
Thanks a lot for sharing this, very interesting info, it’s exactly what I was needing. You have a great site, I am happy I found it.
