In today’s technological age, you don’t need to pay an expensive guide to gain insights into your destination’s sites and attractions. Now, you can simply download an audio tour to your MP3 player, or a GPS tour to your iPhone, to get the information at a fraction of the price (or free!). Here are some of the great places to look for your very own self-guided tour on your next holiday.

GPS Tours

GPSmyCity.com – GPS-Guided City Walks contains a number of guided tours for the iPhone. The tours are map-enabled with photos and descriptions of the destinations. Guides run $4.99 each.

TrekExchange – TrekExchange features another long list of locations around the world, but instead of just GPS-enabled tours, they include MP3 tours for people without iPhones as well. Each tour is individually priced.

MP3 Tours

walki talki – Walki talki offers travelers MP3 walking tours to select European cities including Venice, Rome, London, Paris, Prague, Amsterdam, Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, Munich, Edinburgh and Geneva. Since the tours are audio-based, they even provide a free downloadable map as well. Tours are $4.99 each.

MPTours.com – MPTours.com has a limited number of locations – Buenos Aires, Rome, London and San Francisco – but it does have multiple specialized tours for those areas. Even better is the fact that they are made by locals. Each tour is available in MP3 form for $4.99.

Tourcaster (Editor’s Pick) – Tourcaster is a nice-sized repository of MP3 walking tours for a huge number of locations around the world including Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Each tour is individually priced from free to $20.

Tourist Tracks – Tourist Tracks provides MP3 tours to all the major areas of England, making it limited to only individuals interested in travel to the UK. All tours are individually priced.

MP3 and GPS walking tours put the traveler in the driver’s seat and provide a flexibility that you can’t get by booking a standard city tour. So, next time you head out on the road, check the above websites and download a tour or two beforehand!
