Look up in the sky! It’s a bird….it’s a plane! No….it’s your weekly air travel news! Here’s what’s happening in the world of aviation, from the ground up.

2010 Air Travel Summed Up:  Air Rage

TSA pat-downs, “I’ve had enough!” flight attendants and fees aplenty were what we saw in 2010.  Airline passengers were an unhappy bunch over the last year.  Will we stop flying to points near and far?  Unlikely;  we’ll just keep grousing and complaining about it.  The squeaky wheel does sometimes get the oil…Congress passed the passenger protection act to reduce tarmac delays and it does seem to have helped.   Source:  CNN

Budget Buys at JFK

If a snowstorm has you stranded somewhere this winter, you’re in luck if you happen to be at JFK airport.  There are all sorts of fairly priced options for food and shopping here.  Each terminal has it’s high and low points, but you won’t be bored with the variety at any.     Source:  NYTimes

American Airlines Going The Solo Route

You won’t find American Airlines mingling with the likes of Continental and Delta on either Orbitz or Expedia anymore.  The airline is going it alone with bookings only made available on their own company’s website.  The reason for this is monetary of course.  Every time a booking is made on a website not their own they must pay a commission to the booking agent be it a travel agent or another website.  Time will tell if the new approach will backfire…   Source:  Yahoo

Spirit Is Back In The Spirit

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from our ‘love to hate em’ airline Spirit.  They’re back…an admittedly tall passenger was reduced to standing for the entire 2 1/2 hour flight because he physically could not remain seated.  The industry average for space between seats is 31 inches, but Spirit shortens theirs to 28 inches.  The 6′ 7″ passenger who couldn’t procure an exit row seat was forced to cram himself into his too small seat for take-off and landing but was told by airline personnel to stand for the remainder of the flight.  Dodging drink carts and other passengers en route to the loo were the least of his worries…it can be extremely dangerous to stand for an entire flight.  Spirit was less than sympathetic….   Source:  ABCNews
