Observatory, a well-known student suburb of Cape Town, is filled with an entertaining and varied bar scene. You’ll be sure to have a great night out in Obz whether for the big game, a birthday or some fun with friends!

Stones, a Cape Town chain, is a pool hall and bar. The friendly environment is the perfect place to unwind with a group of friends after a day of work, or to mingle and meet new people.

A Word to the Wise: Stones tends to attract many international students from the neighborhood, so don’t expect a South African cultural experience.

Best Night To Go: Wednesday. There’s a two-for-one special from 10 to 11 p.m., but get there before 10 because the bar will be packed.

This bar and restaurant is the ultimate happy hour destination. Every day from 5 to 6 p.m. they serve half-priced cocktails for R16 (about $2.50 US). The relaxed atmosphere includes an outdoor deck, beach area, frequent live music shows and an awesome menu. Don’t miss out on the reggae rice and a green iguana drink.

A Word to the Wise: Sit outside if possible.

Best Night To Go: Any day for happy hour.

Gandalf’s, a Lord of the Rings-themed bar, is an interesting place to check out. If you want to try something off the beaten path be sure to spend a night here.

A Word to the Wise: Be prepared for loud, heavy metal music.

Best Night To Go: Thursday. It’s ladies’ night and there are great deals.

Scrumpy Jack’s

Scrumpy Jack’s is the best place in Obz to catch a game of rugby and drink a liter of beer. This cozy sports bar, filled with TV screens, is packed for every big game. Checking out a sporting event at Scrumpy’s with the lively environment and passionate fans is a must-do in Obz.

A Word to the Wise: Don’t have a shot of Stroh no matter what. Trust me.

Best Night To Go: Any game day.

If you want to celebrate a special occasion over margaritas, this Mexican restaurant is the perfect place. Besides the tasty frozen cocktails, there’s a full menu and inviting atmosphere.

A Word to the Wise: Be sure to make a reservation.

Best Night to Go: Friday.
