Turning Heads Salon & Spa in NYC: Beauty Review

If your wallet is a bit too slim for a beach jaunt this summer but your body is craving a getaway (come on, you deserve it!), you can still make your escape by heading uptown to one of NYC’s budget spa gems. This weekend, our very own spa junkie Perrin Bailey tested out the pampering credentials of Turning Heads Salon & Spa, a spot that turned to be a true a diamond-in-the-rough on 121st street in Harlem.

Turning Heads SalonThe entrance to Turning Heads is tucked into a small courtyard below street level. A few minutes before my appointment time, I descended toward a curtained doorway that instantly separates honking taxis and bustle of the city outside. Stepping into the lobby,  I encountered the  smooth scents of lavender and other herbal oils—an instant cue to unwind—and a knowledgeable receptionist who lead me to a softly lit decompression room to discuss treatment preferences.

For my afternoon retreat, I opted for a Swedish Stress Reduction Massage (60 minutes, $100) and Reflexology Foot Massage (30 minutes, $50). My masseuse, Don, has been working at Turning Heads the past three years or so and his experience really showed. He selected with a woody fragrance for my treatment and used aromatherapy oils that include invigorating peppermint and citrus as well as soothing forest herbs. His massage technique as strong, but not painfully so, and I felt my treadmill-ridden muscles and stress-induced knots loosen as he strategically applied pressure. I emerged feeling from my session feeling as relaxed as if I’d spent the afternoon lying by the ocean (well almost!).

The salon upstairs from the spa specializes in treatments for ethnic hair types, and if the constant stream of repeat and new customers is any indication, its popularity is on the rise. Downstairs, a clinician conducts manicures and pedicures. There is also a small steam room and 1-person sauna, so you can hydrate and heat in peaceful quietude.

The spa offers champagne wedding and prom packages and spa parties starting at $135, as well as senior and student discounts and reduced prices at off-peak hours.
