Look up in the sky! It’s a bird….it’s a plane! No….it’s your weekly air travel news! Here’s what’s happening in the world of aviation, from the ground up.

Tower Control

Is it an airport control tower or a billboard? Airport officials in Medford, Oregon have come up with what they think is a creative way to generate income for the airport budget:  using the air traffic control tower as advertising space. Of course, that decision is leading to a brouhaha between the privately owned airport and the FAA. Will it really matter to anyone? We’re all so bombarded by advertising everyday one more billboard shouldn’t make much of a difference.  Source:  USAToday

Save The Turkeys

You’d think the FAA would have more pressing matters to attend to than saving a flock of turkeys. Not so apparently. For almost 70 years the town of Yellville, Arkansas has hosted a Turkey Trot over Columbus Day weekend. The highlight of the event was the dropping of live turkeys out of planes so the children in the town could chase after them to keep them as pets. Being technically illegal to drop anything – flight capable or not – out of a moving aircraft, the FAA put the word out that anyone caught doing so would be prosecuted. It seemed to work…no turkeys were harmed during this year’s festival.  Source:  KSPR

A Little South America In NYC

Diners at the New York City restaurant got more than just a great meal at the Nuela restaurant last week. LAN Airlines handed out free round-trip tickets to every shocked patron in the restaurant. Way to promote the airline and the country! You have a chance to get in on the fun too…follow @LANAirlinesUSA on Twitter and retweet the contest details before October 13.  Source:  Jaunted

Food For Flight

Picture this: you have a somewhat short layover at an airport…barely enough time to get from one gate to the next, let alone grab a decent meal for the flight. What to do? If your layover is at the Minneapolis-St.Paul airport or JFK Terminal 3 (Chicago coming soon), you’re in luck. Just download the free app B 4 You Board and order your meal to be delivered to your gate within 20 minutes. No charge either if you depart before the food arrives…just an empty stomach.  Source:  Gadling
