Look up in the sky! It’s a bird….it’s a plane! No….it’s your weekly air travel news! Here’s what’s happening in the world of aviation, from the ground up.

Winning In-Flight Foodstuffs

While probably none of us would describe an airline meal as gourmet, some airlines are actually trying to create a pleasant spread. The ones succeeding, as noted by the Airtrax 2011 Passenger’s Choice Awards, are actually pleasing passengers palates. Note: most of the tasty meals are served to the premium seats, but for those of us in Economy class, Thai Airways takes the cake.  Source:  USNews

Not Just Making Small Talk

The latest phase in TSA screening has started at Boston’s Logan Airport. Dubbed the ‘chat-down’ it involves the security agent asking a series of questions to the passenger at the security checkpoint. This isn’t instead of the body scan or metal detector screening, it’s in addition to them. Based on tactics used at airports in Israel, security officials are hoping this strategy will lead to sussing out potential threats.  Source:  USAToday

Seat Skirmishes

Airline flights these days are crowded, passengers are in a hurry and not always at their most friendly. But the truth of the matter is that we all DO have to get along when flying. It might seem glaringly obvious to the more charming among us, but the best way to have a pleasant flight is NOT to engage in a war with your seat mate.  Practice the golden rule and you might be surprised what your fellow passengers will do to accommodate you. Bottom line: Play Nice!  Source:  Gadling

No Excuses

A passenger on an American Airlines flight last week became so disruptive in-flight that he had to be restrained until landing. Attempts by the flight crew to calm the passenger had no effect and the man allegedly started shouting threats and attacking the crew. Speaking through an interpreter he later explained that he was distressed over his dying brother. Sad as that may be, drunk and disorderly on a flight will get you nothing but trouble.  Source:  Baltimore Sun

New Routes

This week’s new routes come from a varied bunch:  Alaska Airlines, Condor, WestJet, AeroMexico and Porter Airlines. Also from Porter, an additional wintertime route (Boston.com).  Source:  Jaunted
