Look up in the sky! It’s a bird….it’s a plane! No….it’s your weekly air travel news! Here’s what’s happening in the world of aviation, from the ground up.

Up In The Air

Even if you’re not looking for membership into the Mile-High Club, it might be nice to be able to pick your seat-mate for a flight. KLM thinks so too and is going to start offering their version of online dating early next year. Via Facebook or Linkedin, travelers can choose to make their flight itinerary and profile known to other travelers on the same flight. Don’t use either of those social media sites? The service will be available to all passengers utilizing online check-in.  Source:  USAToday

Why Is My Flight Delayed?

I’m not sure if this will help us while traveling or not, but American Airlines has a new travel aid for our use. The airline’s flight status board will now display not only any delay the fight may be experiencing, but why. See, even if you have a connecting fight with the same flight number for both segments that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be on the same aircraft. Your connecting aircraft could be coming from somewhere else and if that flight is delayed, yours will be also. The new display won’t solve these delay problems;  it will just give you a direction to vent your frustration.  Source:  CNTraveler

Frequent Flyer Frenzy

It’s that time of year again…holiday music playing over the airwaves, braving the shopping mall to find the perfect gift, and the rush to add miles to your frequent flyer account. Huh? Well, for those air travelers who enjoy the perks of being an elite member of a frequent flyer club this is also the time of year to take stock of your status for the upcoming year. Sometimes a short-haul flight will put you over the mileage minimum needed to keep those upgrades coming for 2012 and be well worth it’s cost.  Source:  NYTimes

Happy Gogo From Delta

From now until January 2 the folks from eBay and Gogo have teamed up to offer 30 minutes of free in-flight internet access on Wi-Fi equipped Delta Airlines flights. After those 30 minutes are up you can still lurk, browse and buy on and  So rest easy if you’re still not done with your shopping…airline tickets make a great gift!  Source:  Gadling

To The Moon!

And we thought the cost of a RTW ticket was daunting.  How does $200,000 for an intergalactic space flight sound? Richard Branson of Virgin Airways, etc. fame has plenty of passengers lining up to be among the first to experience ‘Astronauts For Dummies’ despite the astronomical expense. And it all might happen sooner than you’d think. Spaceport America in New Mexico is expected to be ready for it’s maiden voyage by Christmas 2012.  Source:  MSNBC
