Puerto Rico Honeymoon: St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort

Planning a wedding can be stressful. Cake, invitations, table arrangements, ensuring your feuding relatives aren’t sitting at the same table for dinner—it takes months of effort to cover your bases and think of the little things. Chances are, after the Big Day, all you’ll want to do is fly away and park your rear on a beach next to your new hubby.

For a tropical, yet easy honeymoon (no passport needed!) fly into San Juan, Puerto Rico and ditch the city for the 483-acre St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort. Located in Rio Grande on the northeastern side of the island, the 483-acre resort is loaded with both on and off-property things to do.

The resort has golf cart shuttle service to move you around the large property, so simply dial up the front desk and within minutes, you’ll have a personal chauffer at your disposal. Go for a romantic walk (or grab bikes) to ride the miles of nature trails lined with coconut palm, almond trees, and rainforest vegetation. Or head to the Aquatic Center, a rustic-looking building nestled on the shore of a glassy, sheltered pond. Here you can sign up for a one-hour guided golf cart tour where nature experts drive you through a portion of the trails pointing out 4-foot lime green iguanas (they sun themselves on the roads), lizards, turtles, tropical trees and the 40-some tropical birds that find sanctuary on the property. Your guide will explain Puerto Rico’s diverse eco systems—this is good to do right away so you can pull together a sense of direction around the property and know what bright flowers, insects, and lizards you’ll no doubt encounter.

At the Aquatic Center, you can sign up for complementary lessons (through the concierge) for all non-motorized water sports including snorkeling, sailing, fishing, paddle boarding, and kayaking. Or if you’d rather skip the lesson, grab a boat or board, and head out around the peaceful surrounding river channels. Kayak tours are also available, so you can get up close to the dozens of tropical fish, navigate the riverbanks, and bird watch. Pack your binoculars. Though there isn’t scuba diving on the property, St. Regis’s concierges can arrange dive trips and round trip transportation.

If you’d like to get off the property and see more of Puerto Rico, take a catamaran tour. For about $100, you’ll spend the day on an ocean-going boat with an open bar, lunch and snacks. Catamaran tours leave from the nearby port of Fajardo, and run to Icacos Island and Palomino Island. The boat crew provides snorkel equipment so you can dive down to the coral reef. With blue, yellow and green tropical fish that eat bread crumbs from your hand, it feels like you’re swimming in an aquarium. If you’re lucky, you might even glimpse a sea turtle.

Once you satiate your appetite for adventure, you can sit back and relax in your room’s Jacuzzi, or head to the pool area (with oceanfront access) to soak up the sun. St. Regis is a serene Caribbean getaway, where you can kick off your sandals, put your feet up, and enjoy being newlyweds.
